The unbeaten Carolina Panthers travel on a short week to face the “must win out” Dallas Cowboys in Game II of the Thanksgiving NFL prime time menu. Some bettors are going broke thinking that this is the week that Carolina is going to lose yet when the smoke clears, the Panthers just post wins week after week. The lack of Carolina respect is still in play as the 3-7 Cowboys opened as one-point favorites in the game with the total set at 47. Early Panther money has made the game a pick with the total bet down to 46. The Cowboys snapped their seven-game losing streak with Tony Romo returning to the lineup. Now in his 13th year out of Eastern Illinois, Romo was clearly rusty in his first game since September 20th but provided a huge emotional lift to the Pokes who won 24-14 on the road at Miami. The 4:30 PM kickoff will carried on CBS and weather will not be an issue in the Jerry Dome.
Much like people waiting for the Panthers to throw in a clunker, people continue to wait and see if Cam Newton will crash and burn. Newton has always gotten the most from the least and this year is no different with Newton also posting elite numbers of his own. Now in his fifth year out of Auburn, Newton is off a career best Five touchdown passes against the Redskins and now sports a 20/9 TD/INT ration on his state line. Newton has also rushed for 382 yards and six scores. Jonathon Stewart has had a rare injury free year and leads the backs with 782 yards as the workhorse. Tight end Greg Olsen has 48 catches to lead the team in receiving, that’s 18 grabs note than Ted Ginn Jr and a list of wide outs from the witness protection program. The defense is No.4 in the league and top eight in every defensive measurable and can claim the NFL’s top two inside linebackers including tackling machine Luke Kuechly.
Tony Romo was 18-28 for 227 yards with to picks and two scores in his return vs. the Dolphins. Darren McFadden had his best day as a Cowboys rushing for 129 yards on 29 carries. Top wideouts Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams both caught touchdown passes from Romo and figure to have better numbers in the final six games as Romo gets his timing back. TE Jason Whitten, a usual Romo favorite, was kept in to block vs. the Fish and had a personal season low in targets. The Dallas defense had arguably its best game of the year holding Miami to just nine first downs and 70 yards rushing. Rolando McClain stepped in front of a Ryan Tannehill pass and walked into the end zone with a 12 yard pick six.
The Panthers might just be scratching the surface of how good that they might be. Carolina has won it’s last three games by an average margin of 17.7 ppg. with Newton and the defense coming off monster games. The defense forced five turnovers in Sunday’s rout of the Redskins and lead the league in takeaways with 25. The Panthers are 8-2 against the spread this year. The Cowboys are 3-0 with Romo starting and 0-7 when he doesn’t. The offense faces its toughest spot of the year against the Carolina stop unit. The Dallas defense has been tough in their own right holding three of its last four opponents to 12, 10 and 14 points
