Game Preview: Cincinnati at South Florida

by Jeff Allen of Jeff Allen Sports

A pair of 6-4 AAC teams square off Friday night at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa as the Cincinnati Bearcats take on the South Florida Bulls. Both teams have had up and down seasons but both are playing well down the stretch. Cincinnati has won three of four with a 33-30 loss at unbeaten Houston the only blemish. South Florida has won five of six and comes off an upset win over previously unbeaten in conference Temple. A South Florida win here and a Temple loss to Memphis on Saturday would put the Bulls in control of the AAC East. Cincinnati has been installed a -2.5 point favorite with the total set at 64. Kickoff is set for 8:00 PM EST under cloudy skies with a sticky temperature of 75.

Both teams have had up and down seasons. The Bearcats have basically beaten everyone they were supposed to and lost in their big matchups with Temple, Memphis, at BYU and at Houston. They’ve had some adversity with QB Gunnar Kiel two games and parts of other with injuries. The Cats have three running backs with 600+ yards and have combined for 17 touchdowns. The Cincinnati offense is ranked No.4 nationally but has been plagued by turnovers as Kiel and his replacements have thrown a combined 14 picks. The Cincinnati defense is bottoms half of the FBS in all metrics.

South Florida has found it’s groove and on a big time roll. After early losses to Florida State, Maryland and Memphis …the Bulls have pretty much smoked everyone other than a loss at white hot Navy. The Bulls are a running team that is led by a capable passer in Quinton Flowers (60%, 1676,14/6). Flowers has also run the ball for five-yards a carry with 747 yards and eight touchdowns. Marion Mack has 1065 yards and six scores. Rodney Adams (31, 585, 7 TDs) is the top wide out. The USF defense is average but very tough in the red zone.

Cincinnati has dominated the series doing 7-2 straight up in the last nine and 9-2 ATS in the L11 of the series. The Bearcats are 9-4 ATS in their L13 road games. The Bulls are 10-19-1 ATS at home in their L20 but 4-0 this year and allowing just 18 ppg. in it’s last five games vs. non-option teams. Both teams are Bowl eligible and looking to improve their respective prospects. South Florida still have a shot at the AAC championship game with help. Should be a good game.
