With all four division teams within two games with five to be played, the NFC East is without question up for grabs. Even the reeling Philadelphia Eagles and battered Dallas Cowboys are still in the mix. Monday night, one of the great NFL rivalries is renewed as the 3-8 Dallas Cowboys travel to Fed Ex Field outside the nation’s capital to take on the 5-6 first place Washington Redskins. This is the first meeting between the two this year with the rematch taking place at Jerry’s World on January 3rd in the season finales for both teams. The line opened Skins -4 with the total set at 42. Washington and the under has seen some action early in the week and the number at this writing is Washington -4.5 and 41 1/2. Weather will not be an issue with the game temperature at kickoff expected to be in the mid-50s. The game will be carried as always by ESPN.
While the Cowboys technically have a playoff pulse, you would have to think that the playoffs are a stretch at best without Tony Romo who is out again after re-breaking his collarbone in the Thanksgiving loss to Carolina. The Pokes were 0-7 (1-6 ATS) after Romo went down in Week II and things don’t figure to improve much here. Matt Cassell will be under center and has completed 68% of his passes in his five games since joining “Big D”. Darren McFadden has come on in the second half and has an outside shot of rushing for 1000 yards. Jason Witten (55 catches) leads the team in grabs as all-world Dez Bryant has been limited to 23 catches in another injury riddled season. Dallas is getting another outstanding year from the defense which is No.7 against the pass and No.8 overall. Ex-Penn State great Sean Lee leads the team in tackles with 81.
The Red Skins have flown under-the-radar for most of 2015 and with all the heavy lifting done and just the Cowboys 2x, at Bears, Eagles, and Bill on deck …. control its own destiny. The Skins have won five straight at home behind Kurt Cousins who just doesn’t turn the ball over (16 TDs/10 Ints) at The Fed. Alfred Morris (482 yards) has proven to be an elite back since the day he left Florida Atlantic where he had a stellar career. TE Jordan Reed (55, 6 TDs) has become a favorite target of Cousins while Pierre Garcon heads the receiving corps. The defense is bottom third but plays the pass tough and will make itself known. Dashon Goldson is a crushing free safety out of Washington and leads the defense with 86 tackles.
As previously stated, the Cowboys are 0-7 in games that Tony Romo hasn’t started. That said, they have won three of the last four in the series, 9 of 13 going back and five of the last seven on this field. Dallas is 1-3 as a road dog this year. The Skins have been underdogs in 10 of their 11 games this year, 0-1 as a favorite. Cousins absolutely does his best work at home throwing 11 touchdowns to just two picks as opposed to five touchdowns and eight picks on the road. Teams off the Giants this year are 7-2-1. Dallas is 0-2 ATS on MNF the last three years, Washington 1-3. In the end, inter-division games between train wreck divisions like the NFC East and AFC South could come down to just what team wants it more.
