Game Preview: Houston at Indianapolis

by Jeff Allen of Jeff Allen Sports

Somebody has to win the God awful AFC South and the winner of the Texan (6-7)/Colt (6-7) showdown on Sunday will take a giant step in that direction with just two games to play. Houston is off tough back-to-back losses at Buffalo and then to a foul mood New England team on Sunday night. The Texans will also be without quarterback Brian Hoyer who could not pass his concussion protocol. T.J. Yates gets the start. The Colts have also lost two straight but Indy was able to do so by an ugly 96-26 aggregate. Andrew Luck practiced this week for the first time since going down with a lacerated kidney on November 8th. Luck has already been ruled out for Sunday so it will be up to 40-year-old Matt Hasselbeck and his bruised ribs to hold the fort down. Do to the uncertainty of the quarterback status for both teams, no line has been posted in either Las Vegas or offshore at this writing.

T.J. Yates has seen action in three games for the Texans this year, throwing the game winning touchdown in the 10-6 win over Cincinnati and then winning his only start against the Jets. For the year, the ex-North Carolina star is 22-47 for 302 yards, three touchdowns and no picks. Alfred Blue and Chris Polk carry the mail since Arian Foster was lost for the year in Week IV. DeAndre Hopkins (89-1221, 10 TDs) has 49 catches more than next in line Nate Washington. The No.7 ranked defense is of course led by DT J.J. Watt with Brian Cushing leading the team in tackles (96) from his inside linebacker spot. Cushing has been undergoing tests during the week for an undisclosed
lower leg injury so keep an eye on his status.

The noose gets tighter and tighter around the neck of Indy coach Chuck Pagano as the team continues to struggle. Truth be told, the Colts have been exposed as a team that is really not that good and is actually fortunate to be 6-7 and still in the hunt of a terrible division. There are no short team fixes for this team either as it is the oldest team in the NFL and Andrew Luck has clearly regressed in his injury riddled fourth year. The defense is in tatters and is off a game where it allowed 156 yards rushing and 51 points to Jacksonville last week. Again, with the No.26 ranked offense and the No.28 ranked defense, the Indianapolis Colts are just not very good.

This is a tough one to call until the overall picture of what protagonists will be playing is made clearer. There is still the possibility of a T.J. Yates vs. Charley Whitehurst duel to decide the leader of the AFC South. Indy won the first go around 27-20 in Week Five as the Texans cashed just one of three trips to the red zone and were +2 in the turn-over battle. The Texans are just 2-4 as road dogs this year with all four losses by more than a touchdown. The Colts are 3-3 at home, 1-3 as a home favorite. Indy was outscored 42-3 in the second half last week by the Jags. Five of last six Texan games have gone under while six of the last none Colt games have gone over the total. Pick your poison.
