Two defensive specialists square off in a key Big Ten matchup on Saturday as No.17 Iowa (6-0) travels to
Evanston to take on the No.20 Northwestern Wildcats at Ryan Field. The unbeaten Hawkeyes who seemingly
escape week in and week out, are riding a strong rush offense and the nation’s No.5 ranked rushing defense.
Northwestern comes into this one after getting blown out 38-0 in its showdown with Michigan, a game that was
ostensibly over when the Wolverines ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. Expect perfect conditions
for the 12:00 PM EST kickoff with temperatures in the high 40’s and mostly sunny. TV coverage will be regional.
If Iowa can win here, the Hawkeyes have to be considered front runners in the Big Ten Western Division with a
real big shot to run the table. With a win over Wisconsin already under its belt and only Maryland, Indiana and
Purdue on deck, a win in Iowa’s November 27th game at Nebraska could send the Hawkeyes to the big Ten
championship game to face the Michigan-Michigan State-Ohio State survivor. Iowa has been life and death in
every game this year other than North Texas. The Hawkeye front seven is as good as any in the nation save
Alabama. The stop unit took a big hit last week in losing DT Drew Ott for the season with a knee injury. The
offense is run around stud running back Jordan Canzeri who has rushed for 697 yards and nine touchdowns.
Northwestern led the nation in scoring defense going into last week and let’s remember that this is the same team
that dominated Stanford in the opening game of the season. The Cats allow just 6.0 ppg. at home and should be
fired up if Pat Fitzgerald is able to get his troops to put Michigan behind them as a one time thing and concentrate
on the task at hand. The Northwestern offense has struggled with freshman quarterback Clayton Thorson at the
controls and is 114th nationally in passing and 98th in total offense. Thorson will need to figure out a way to throw
downfield as the Wildcats don’t figure to get much on the ground vs. the stout Hawkeye stop unit.
The favorite has won and covered the last four games in the series including the Hawkeyes (-3, 48) 48-7 beat down
of the Wildcats last year in Iowa City. Iowa travels well and has covered its L7 tries as a road favorite. The under is
14-3 in Northwestern’s L17 home games and the Cats are also 11-4 low in in their L15 vs, winning records. The over
is 5-1 in Iowa games this year but in their only game against a similar style opponent, Iowa escaped Wisconsin 10-6.
Players will have to decide if Iowa can continue to tip-toe through the mine field and whether Northwestern can rebound
off its crushing loss at Michigan.
