Two of the legendary franchises from the old AFL square off Sunday as the new York Jets travel to Oakland
to face the Raiders. In fact, November 17th marks the 47th anniversary of the infamous Heidi Bowl, one of the
most famous games in NFL history. The game opened at Jets -2 with the total set at 44. New York has taken
all the money and is now -3. The total has taken little action and is unchanged. Weather could play a small
part here as there is a 25% chance of light rain, the game time temperature for the 4:05 PM EST kickoff is
forecasted to be in the mid-60’s. The game is the late feature on CBS.
After six games, the Jets are right where they want to be. They’re 4-2 with a solid hold on the two hole in the
AFC East and 2-1 in division with wins over trailers Buffalo and Miami. Gang Green gave New England everything
it wanted in a 30-23 loss in last holding the Pats to 70 yards below their season average. Much maligned journey-
man Ryan Fitzpatrick has proven a capable field general and to this point of the season has kept mistakes to a
minimum. “Beat East”, Chris Ivory is averaging 5.0 ypc. and the the receiving corps has been super with Brandon
Marshall and Eric Decker dangerous bookends. The defense is No.1 in the league and top five in virtually every
defensive measurable.
Since getting blown out by the Bengals in their opener, you could argue that the Raiders should be on a run of five
straight wins. Much like the Giants, the Raiders gave away games at Chicago and Denver but have overall have
shown nothing but buy signs. Derek Carr has made great strides from his rookie season completing 66% of his
passes with an impressive 11/3 TD/Int ratio. The Raiders are pass oriented but can rush the ball with Latavius Murray
who averages 4.4 yards-per carry when given a chance. Amari Cooper was the best wide out taken out of this year’s
draft (33, 519, 3 TDs) and Michael Crabtree is having a nice year on the other side. The defense is tough against the
run at No.3 but dead last against the pass allowing 304 yards per game by air.
The Jets would appear to be much more focused and relaxed under Bowles and should be razor sharp here. The Jets
are on a 7-1-1 ATS run and defense travels. Fitzpatrick could have a very big day if the Jets can establish the run against
a staunch black and silver front seven. Hard to judge the Raiders off their past history (21-36-2 as home dog and 2-11 ATS
off f a straight up win) as this is certainly not the same team under Del Rio. The Raiders have a tough second half but with
a win here, the playoff could be an outside possibility.
