This week’s Thursday Night Football offering features a pair of NFC ATS “go to guys ” squaring off in the desert, each looking to improve it’s playoff positioning. The Vikings, off bad losses to Green Bay and Seattle, have to be wondering if they’re ready for prime time, while Arizona has pretty much locked up their division but needs to take care of their business in the event that Carolina should falter. Linesmakers have installed the Cardinals a touchdown home favorite with the total set at 45. Cardinal and the over has seen light early play sending the number to Cards -7.5 and 46. University of Phoenix Stadium has a retractable roof which closes in the cold but that doesn’t figure to be an issue here with the temperature at kickoff expected in the low 70’s with no chance of precipitation.
There have been grumblings by the Vikings offense about the play calling, particularly from the resurgent Adrian Peterson. Purple Jesus already has 1182 yards and 8 touchdowns in 12 games but had just 18 yards on eight carries in last weeks blowout loss to Seattle. Expect to see a heavy dose of No.28 this week, especially with second-year QB Teddy Bridgewater struggling to throw the football. More of a concern for Minnesota is the quick turnaround plus travel for a defense that has been dinged with minor but significant injuries to the back seven and especially the secondary.
Arizona is red-hot. Since losing a 25-13 decision at Pittsburgh back on October 18th, the Cardinals have won six straight and will be looking for it’s first seven-game win streak since 1974 with a win here. Carson Palmer is having a Pro-Bowl type year despite not getting much help from an injury depleted running back corps. Chris Johnson is slated to return and play Thursday. The wide receiving corps featuring Larry Fitzgerald (91, 1047, 7 TDs) and the Browns is arguably the best and deepest unit in the league and the No.4 ranked defense is probably the best stop unit you never hear about.
Minnesota is 5-1 ATS on the road this year and and on a 19-10 run as a dog, 4-1 this year. That said, the Vikings are off their worst home loss since 1984 and and on a short work week vs. a killer with travel. The Cardinals are on a 23-10 ATS run against conference foes and off a revenge win over St Louis in a game where the Red Birds rolled to 524 yards of offense and 29 first downs. That said, Arizona has not covered a game where they’ve been favored by a touchdown or more that year and are currently on a 1-8 run as a home favorite of 7.5-10 points. Arizona in by far the better spot to win but …… ???
