Game Preview: New Orleans (4-5) at Washington (3-5)

by Jeff Allen of Jeff Allen Sports

Two teams with losing records but still an outside shot of a playoff spot square of Sunday at FedEx Field as the New Orleans Saints take on the Washington Redskins. The Saints are off a crippling home loss to Tennessee where a win would have put the Whodats within one game of the suddenly struggling Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South. Washington was down 14-0 to New England before the first television break but were overall reasonably representative in a 27-10 loss at New England. The Skins are still in the hunt for the NFC East and could have an outside shot at a second wildcard as their second half schedule is soft and contains four division games. The line opened Saints -1 and 50 and has remained unchanged at this writing. Weather is no issue as the forecast is for sunny skies and 60 at the 1:00 PM EST kickoff. The game will be carried on Fox and Direct TV 712.

Rumors of the demise of Drew Brees have been greatly exaggerated. The 15 year pro out of Purdue has thrown for 900+ yards and 10 TDs in the last two weeks and appears to be on his way to another 5000 yards passing season with 40 TDs. Mark Ingram (584, 5 TDS) is having a solid year and Brandin Cooks and Willie Sneed have taken over as the primary wide outs. The No.31st ranked defense has its moments but while the stop unit has recovered 14 fumbles, the secondary has only kicked in four interceptions to the cause.

Washington has been hurt by a lack of offense (No.29) and costly turnovers. Kirk Cousins has just 9 touchdown passes to this point and the Skins were held to just 250 yards of total offense last weekend at Foxboro and while Cousins and Crew could do some business against a suspect at best New Orleans defense, it is unlikely he could trade points in an air war with Brees. RB Alfred Morris is all pro material but simply has not gotten the touches (312 yards, zero TDs) to do his thing. Ex-Saint Pierre Garson is having a decent year. The Skin defense is ranked No.9 against the run but the jury is still on whether that is because their opponents don’t have to throw because they can run so effectively or whether the secondary is doing a nice job. Free safety Dashon Godson leads the team in tackles with 66 and that is not a good thing.

There have been no recent meetings between these two who have been notorious ticket burner the last three years. We’ve already established that Cousins cannot trade with Brees so this could be the week Washington tries to get Alfred Morris jump started. Washington does its best work at home where they have won three straight but their 9-20 run L29 as dog is scary at best. This is the Saints last game before the bye (6-3-1 ATS L10 prior) so they can leave it on the field here. New Orleans 8-4 over in its L12 and if the Saints get off early, this could have the makings of a shootout.
