Game Preview: Notre Dame (6-1) at Temple (7-0)

by Jeff Allen of Jeff Allen Sports

In this week’s only game between teams ranked in the AP Top 25, the No.9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish travel
to Philly to take on No.21 and unbeaten Temple Owls. The Irish are off a much needed bye week after facing
Clemson, a pesky Navy outfit and their rivalry game with USC. The upstart Owls gave notice that they would
be a force to be reckoned with after opening wins over Penn State and Cincinnati. Temple also has some extra
time after its 24-14 Thursday night sleepwalking look ahead win over East Carolina. The game opened and has
remained Irish -10. The total opened at 48 and and has been bet up to 49, 49.5 and 50 depending on the out.

Notre Dame’s season has been nothing short of amazing having lost nine opening day starters along the way to
season ending injuries. The next man up approach has worked well for Chip Kelly’s crew against a top rated
schedule and one could argue that except for some ill-timed turnovers that Irish should have beat No.3 Clemson
in Death Valley. The Notre Dame offense is almost perfectly balanced averaging 235 by ground and 265 through
the air. The defense has done remarkably well considering their injuries to key people and will have their work
cut out for them against a feisty Owl outfit that ranks 9th in the country in time of possession.

Temple had big aspirations coming into the season with 18 returning starters. The Owls showed several by signs
last year but were often on the wrong end of close decisions thanks to costly mistakes. Many of those mistakes
were junior QB P.J. Walker who is already fifth on the Temple all-time passing list. Walker is a much improved
game manager and has also become an excellent field general. Jahad Thomas leads the AAC in rushing with 822
yards and WR Robby Anderson has 31 catches for 388 yards and five Temple’s ten TD receptions. The Owl defense
is 6th nationally against the run allowing just 91 yards per game but this is the first time they’ll face a big physical
offensive line of this quality.

This is the second all-time meeting between the two schools, Notre Dame winning 28-6 (-29, 53) at the Golden Dome
in Matt Rhule first game as head coach of the Owls. ESPN Gameday will be downtown for the event so there should
be a frenzied atmosphere at a sold out Franklyn Financial Field. Weather will be perfect as the Owls look to go 8-0 for
the first time in school history. Notre Dame has three starters from the Philly area and the Irish are 14-1-1 all time playing
in the City of Brotherly Love and it’s different venues over the years. Notre Dame is also 15-0 all time playing on Halloween.
