The first of several Big 12 showdowns over the next three weeks starts Saturday in a battle of unbeatens as No.5 TCU travels to Stillwater to take on the No.12 Oklahoma State Cowboys. TCU started the season No.2 ranked team in the country but despite taking care of its business, has dropped in the polls thanks to several ho hum non-dominating performances. To be fair, the Horned Frogs had a rash of injuries early on that has cost them up to five starters at some points of the season. Oklahoma State is right where it wants to be. After a weak non-conference schedule and spanking the bottom half of the Big 12, the Cowboys get TCU, Baylor and in-state rival Oklahoma, all at home, over the next four weeks. The game open with TCU at -5 where it has remained for most of the week except for a brief drop to -4.5 on Tuesday. At this writing it is TCU -5 with the total bet down from 79 to 76 1/2. Kick is at 3:30 PM EST, watch and win on Fox.
Horned Frog quarterback Trevone Boykin will be in New York on Heisman Saturday. After a slow start, the TCU field general has thrown for 2927 yards with 28 touchdowns while rushing for another 524 yards and six touchdowns. He has plenty of help starting with Aaron Brown (699, 8 TDs) in the backfield and a real star at wide receiver in Josh Doctson who has 71 catches for 1250 yards and 14 touchdown in eight games. The Frogs are No.14th rushing the football, No.4 throwing the football and No.2 in total offense. As previously mentioned, injuries have wreaked havoc on the stop unit which has still been decent with a bend but don’t break approach.
Mike Gundy has done a real nice job with this program and has had some excellent teams of the past 5-8 years that have always managed to just come up short. Okie State has a dream schedule this year and has no excuses after catching all three Big 12 heavyweights at home in the final four games of the season. Quarterback Mason Rudolph is a sophomore work in progress who has thrown for 2600+ yards and 12 touchdowns but with an alarming eight INTs.
Running back is pretty much by committee with Chris Carson leading the squad with 325 yards. David Glidden heads a talented group of wide outs with 38 catches and 628 yards. The defense is ranked N0.38 nationally allowing 357 yards per games and a tick more than 23 points per game.
Last year, TCU (-10, 62) crushed Oklahoma State 42-9 in Waco. In that game, the Frogs torched the Cowboys for 676 yards of offense, 261 rushing and 415 passing. That said, the Frogs have not won here since 1991 and will look to break through here. TCU’s “unimpressive” wins have all come on the road with wins of 6, 3, 7 and 24 at Iowa State in a game that was 21-21 just before the half. Oklahoma State is second in the nation in sacks with 30 and will look to get after Boykin while keeping everything in front of them.
