Game Preview: West Virginia at TCU

by Jeff Allen of Jeff Allen Sports

Its getting down to crunch time in the Big 12 as it won’t be long before we start the round robin of conference heavyweights as TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will meet on a seemingly weekly basis. West Virginia (3-3) finishes its four game gauntlet having lost in  the last three weeks to Okie State,  the Sooners and Baylor …. no shame there. The Mounties always have a punchers chance and beat Baylor last year handing the Bears their only loss. The 7-0 Horned Frogs have been rolling despite injuries and adversity and with a win here, will have 10 days to prepare for their November 7th showdown at Oklahoma State. The Game opened with TCU -14 and the total 74. The side has remained unchanged while the total has jumped a point to 75. Weather will not be a factor at kickoff with the temperature expected in the mid-60’s under partly cloudy skies. Strangely enough, ESPN has opted to televise the North Carolina/Pitt game early relegating this game to DTV 217.

This figures to be the final year of the Dana Holgorsen tenure at Morgantown. The former Oklahoma State OC was brought in with huge expectations that have never come to fruition. Holgorsen was 28-23 in first four years at the controls but a breakout team has never happened and would not seem to be happening in the near future. The Mountie defense is a respectable 72st and the offense a very good 19th nationally but still not in a position to trade points with the Baylors and TCUs. A nice team, just middle of the road Big 12.

TCU is rested off a bye that couldn’t have come at a better time. The Frogs have had plenty of time to heal after sleep walking through Iowa State and will again have extra time before traveling to Stillwater. Trevon Boykin is having a Heisman type year at the controls of the Frogs with 2532 yards passing with 25 touchdowns and just five picks. He can hurt you with his feet as well rushing the ball 77 time for 440 (5.7 per) and another five scores. Aaron Green (632, 5.7 8 TDs) is a weapon in the backfield and Josh Doctson (60, 1067, 12 TDs in seven games) is a slam dunk first round pick next April. The defense has lost five defensive starters for whatever reason and has been a not below.

This game amount to a warm up game for TCU as they head into the meat of their schedule and ultimately their final game showdown with Baylor. West Virginia can breathe hope and life into their season but are again on a short week with travel after facing three highly ranked teams back-to-back-to back. Should the Frogs be put on “upset” alert??? We have the utmost respect for Gary Patterson who has done a bang up job with this program and figure the Frogs to be well prepared. The 14 points which will likely be closer to 17 at kickoff is the real consideration.
