Legendary Chicago sportscaster Chet Coppock died Wednesday from complications of injuries sustained in a car accident in Hilton Head, South Carolina on April 6th. Coppock was a riding in the passenger side of a Lexus during a rain storm when the driver lost control, crossed the center line, and was hit head on by a Range Rover. The driver of the Lexus was cited for driving too fast for conditions.
Coppock’s interest in radio started as a child after meeting another radio icon, Jack Brickhouse, on a trip to Wrigley Field. Early on, Coppock was the sports news anchor for NBC’s Channel 5 in Chicago before transitioning to radio. Coppock’s colorful career spanned decades in the Windy City and included stints with the WWF and calling Roller Derby. Coppock was known as “The Godfather” of sports talk radio and was known by the tag line, “It’s your dime, it’s your dance floor”. Chet Coppock was 70.
