Jeff Allen Game Preview: Wisconsin Milwaukee at Wisconsin Green Bay
Not much marquee value on tonight’s holiday card but there are still several interesting conference matchups that includes
a local rivalry out of the Horizon League where (16-10, 7-6) Wisconsin Milwaukee takes a couple of hour bus ride to face
(15-11, 7-6) Wisconsin Green Bay. Both are mid-table teams with little chance of getting to the Big Dance except for an improbable
run through the conference tournament. The homestanding Phoenix opened up as -1.5 point favorites with the total 170. Green
Bay and under money has pushed the number to Phoenix -2.5 with the total dropping all the way down to 168.
Milwaukee is an up and down type that is tough to beat when they play well. The Panthers are just 1-3 in their last four but the win
was a near perfect effort in a 93-85 road win over Horizon heavy Oakland. Mike Tiby, a 6’8″, 230 lb. senior power forward is the Panthers best player averaging (15.2, 8.6) per while 5’9″ PG Jordan Johnson runs the show averaging 12.7 points and dishing out 8.7 assists per. The Panthers have balanced scoring with five players averaging double-digits.
Wisky Green Bay has split its L10 games and prefers up and down track meets. The Phoenix average 85.7 ppg while giving up 83.2 ppg. They would be averaging more if not for converting just 65% of their free throws. Guard Carrington Love (18.0) leads the scoring with backcourt mate Charles Cooper (13.0, 5.6) who also does a nice job on the boards. The Phoenix have a deep bench with nine players seeing significant playing time.
Milwaukee (-5, 164) won the first go around 95-94 back on January 29th. The Panthers used a 9-2 run in the final 1:48 to secure the win. Tough spot for both teams. The Panthers are on a 5-1 run as an underdog but this is the the fourth straight roadie for Milwaukee and the third in five nights. Green Bay is just a 50/50 at home and as a favorite plus Horizon home faves of less than five points are just 5-12 on the year. No real opinion on the side but can’t possibly see this as anything other than a scorefest so our first inclination would be to look over the total.
