JEFF ALLEN MIAMI BEACH BOWL PREVIEW: CENTRAL MICHIGAN vs. TULSA
Two of of the top mid-major programs hook up for a Monday Matinee Bowl in South Beach as the 6-6 Central
Michigan Chippewas take on the 9-3 Tulsa Golden Hurricane at the Miami Beach Bowl. Central Michigan has
been a player in the MAC for more than a decade dating back to the Brian Kelly/Dan LaFevour days in the mid-
2000s. Tulsa is a program with a rich history that is in a break out year after four straight sub-.500s seasons.
The Golden Hurricane lost to Virginia Tech 55-52 last year in Frank Beamer’s final game as head coach of the
Hokies.
The game opened with Tulsa as a -12.5 favorite with the total set at 67 1/2. Tulsa and the over has taken money
with the Canes going back and forth from 12.5 to 13. The over has taken the majority of the action moving to as
high as 70. As of this writing, the high.low seems to have settled on 69.5 at most houses. Weather will be no
issue as the forecast calls for a partly cloudy afternoon with zero chance precipitation. The temperature for the
2:30 PM EST kick is projected to be 80. ESPN will carry the game.
Central Michigan has been an overachiever this year as the it was expected to be a down year for the Chips.
CMU lost four of five down the stretch but got off to a fast start that included a controversial marquee win over
Oklahoma State. The Chips can throw the ball around and are led by QB Cooper Rush (3299, 23/13 TD/INT).
CMU was No.117 rushing the football with Devon Spalding (737, 5.6, 6 TDs) the main option. As MAC teams
go, CMU has a top defense ranking in the 40s nationally across the board in the important stop unit metrics.
Tulsa ranked No.5 in total offense nationally and is led by quarterback Dane Evans (3044, 58%, 27/13) who
started to get attention from the next level. The Canes have a pair of 1000 yard backs in James Flanders
(1537, 6.3, 17 TDs) and D’Angelo Brewer (1330, 5.3, 7 TDs). The Tulsa defense has been dicey at best,
ranking No.89 nationally allowing 434 yards and 31.5 pppg. Cane opponents scored 30+ points in six of the
teams last nine games and the large number of shootouts is likely responsible for the aggressive move on
the over,
