The Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers meet in Week 7 for an important divisional game to see who can keep pace with Denver in the AFC West. San Diego (5-1 SU) currently holds the lead and they are listed as 4.5-point faves. The Chiefs (2-3 SU) are coming off the bye.
Andy Reid became famous for his post-bye week success in Philadelphia, owning a 13-1 SU and 10-4 ATS record following his regular season rest week, 14-1 SU and 11-4 ATS if you take into account the Eagles’ Week 3 win in 2011 following the impromptu cancellation of Week 2 (9/11). The Eagles played 4 overs and 11 unders in these games, outscoring opponents 24.3 to 13.3.
On the road, Philly was 4-0 SU/ATS and all four games stayed under and at home, the Eagles went 10-1 SU and 7-4 ATS with 4 overs and 7 unders.
Only two of those home games were divisional (2-0 SU/ATS and 0-2 O/U) and the only time Philly travelled for a post-bye divisional game was in Week 7, 2001, beating the Giants 10-9 as a 3-point dog (UN 36).
His first year in Kansas City (2013), Reid was tasked with a road trip to the Mile High City following his break and the odds favored Denver (-7.5, O/U 48.5). Upsetting the Broncos at home during Payton Manning’s record setting campaign seemed highly unlikely but we have to remember that the Chiefs were 9-0 straight-up (6-3 ATS) before Denver including a 4-0 SU/ATS record away from Arrowhead. If nothing more, it made the 7.5 points seem like an attractive play.
Denver won that game 27-17 and it was the Chiefs’ only ATS road loss of the regular season. This year the Chiefs struggled with injuries early but found some footing against the Dolphins and Patriots. They are 3-0 ATS on the road and that puts them at 10-1 ATS on the road during the regular season under Reid. San Diego is getting a little too much respect here for wins over teams with a combined 7-21 record straight-up.
