Two of the hottest second half teams in the NFL this year square of in Saturday’s early Wild Card round game as the Kansas City Chiefs travel to Reliant Stadium in Houston to face the Texans. The teams met on this field in Week I with Kansas City (-1, 40) running off to a 27-9 half time lead before holding on for a 27-20 win. The Chiefs than lost five straight before rebounding with 10 straight wins (7-3 ATS) to close the season. Houston was languishing at 2-5 and emaciated with injuries before closing on a 7-2 SU and ATS run to win the AFC South using an unprecedented four quarterbacks in the process. The game opened at Kans City -3 with the total 40 1/2. The number has proven to be solid as there has been little movement at this writing with a couple of houses rocking KC -3.5 and the total down a half tick at 40. Reliant has a retractable roof so weather will not be an issue.
The Chiefs have been anything but dominant over their win streak, they just play solid football. The defense is allowing just 14.5 ppg. over the last 12 games with no opponent scoring more than 22. Kansas City turns the ball over less than any team in the NFL and are +18 in turnovers during their current streak. Alex Smith is the consummate game manager completing 65% of his passes for 3486 yards and 20 touchdowns. The Chiefs lost their elite RB in Jamaal Charles early in the year but Charcandrick West (634, 4 TDs) has proven to be versatile and dependable. Jeremy Maclin (1088, 8 TDs) has provided a wide out threat that KC hasn’t had in years and Travis Kelce (875, 5 TDs) has emerged as one of the better TEs in the AFC. Derrick Johnson is a tackling machine from his inside linebacker spot and while Chief pass rush was not as fierce as recent years, the team still recorded 47 sacks.
No team has epitomized “next man up” like the Houston Texans. Four quarterbacks, Hoyer, Mallett, Tates and Weeden) have
started game this season with recently concussed Bryan Hoyer (61%, 2606, 19/7, 9 starts) getting the call here. Alfred Blue
(698, 2 TDs) has carried the mail since Arian Foster went down to injury in Week IV. DeAndre Hopkins is in the same class
as Antonio Brown and Julio Jones. Nate Washington and Cecil Shirts are nice change of pace receivers. The defense features
DPOY J.J. Watt with his 17.5 sacks with Brian Cushing cleaning up the mess with 110 tackles of all kind from his linebacker
position. The Texan defense has not allowed a touchdown in nine quarters.
This is a tough game to call. Alex Smith threw for 243 yards and three scores in the first meeting but faces a revitalized Houston
stop unit here. Smith has not produced a lot of points down the stretch but the Chiefs haven’t allowed much either. Hoyer is certainly more mistaken prone than Smith but there is also a greater chance of him making a big play. Points will be tough to come by with the Chiefs No.3 in points allowed, the Texans No.8 with a bullet. Keep an eye on the total, that may be the way to go.
