Witnessing History: Madison Bumgarner and the Giants

by Jeff Allen of Jeff Allen Sports

Holy Cow has Madison Bumgarner performed well in this year’s playoffs and World Series. This has been a performance for the ages. It all started in the NL Wildcard game, where he threw a nine inning shutout, giving up only 4 hits, walking 1, while striking out 10. In the NL division series he gave up 2 runs in 7 innings, in the NL conference series he threw 7 and 2/3 shutout innings in game one – then 8 innings, giving up 3 runs in game 5 of the conference series. Fast forward to World Series Game 1 where he gave up 1 run in 7 innings, in game 5 of the World Series he pitched a complete game shutout.

That brings his post-season ERA to 1.14 this year, walking only 6 while striking out 41. We’ve seen the importance of quarterbacks in football, well in major league baseball the starting pitcher often plays just as vital of a role. Bumgarner has provided not just quality, but quantity. Bumgarner’s 47+ innings is 2nd all time only to Curt Schilling’s 48+ innings pitched in 2001. Quality innings and lots of them has made Madison Bumgarner one of the most efficient post-season pitchers in modern baseball. The Giants have him signed to a 6 year, $35 million contract through 2017, with team options in 2018 and 2019 at $12 million per year. Needless to say, he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and Giants fan will continue to cheer on one of the best aces in the game.
